              Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the most common cause of death and disability for children in the America.  Each year, over one million children undergo TBI.  Of these children, only 9% to 38% are referred for special education.  In the 1999-2000 school year, nearly 14,000 students were served in special education programs because of TBI.  Many children with Traumatic Brain Injury are not in special education, but need modifications from the general education teacher.  (Smith, Polloway, Patton, & Dowdy, 2004)
