Magnet Middle School Steps:

When your child is in GRADE FOUR: start visiting magnets that you think you might be interested in. Magnet schools host tours starting at the end of November, early December and some even into January. This is a good time to scope it out. Call the Magnet Coordinator to find out their tour schedule.  Phone numbers are in the Choices brochures, or just call the school office and ask for the magnet coordinator's direct phone line.  Expect to be turned down the first time.

KEEP RECORDS ON EVERYTHING: The downtown magnet office receives thousands of applications each year. Make sure you document every application, letter, and phone call you make. That way, if you are trying to get points reinstated, you can politely point out their mistakes if need be.

MAGNET APPLICATION PROCESS

Each child at an elementary magnet school matriculates to a magnet middle school with 12 points.  You need to have 12 points if possible by the time your child applies to a magnet middle school. You will be awarded 4 points for every year you apply and are refused. If you are accepted and choose not to go to the school you applied to, you loose all of your magnet points to date. So do your research well! (If that happens, don't give up.  Keep applying the following years. You might have enough points to
get into a magnet.)

Point System.
12 points awarded for matriculating students.
4 points awarded for each year on the waiting list
4 points awarded if your home school is overcrowded
4 points awarded if your home school is PHABAO (Predominantly Hispanic, Black, Asian, and Other Non-Anglo)
3 points if a sibling will be at the same school Ethnicity:
The magnets are mandated to have either 60%/40% minority/white enrollments, or 70%/30% minority/white enrollments.
